Soos is a nature reserve in the Czech Republic, near to Františkovy Lázně and the best place to see signs of volcanism in Central Europe. The area is a fen and full of mofettas (exhalations of carbon dioxide). It is not the Yellowstone park but fascinating and a little surreal, it bubbles and gurgles at every corner.

the fen in Soos
The fen.
The fen is placed in a trench in the Eger Graben system, faults in the underground allow the gas to escape and form the exhalations.

Mofette in Soos
A mofetta, the form shows the directions of a fault in the rocks below the mud.

The area is also famous for mineral springs with water containing iron, sulfate, chloride, hydrogen carbonate and  soda.

Kaiserquelle in Soos
Gas rich water, because of the hydrogen sulfide it smells like rotten eggs.
