Etheria elliptica in Ethiopia

I found the freshwater oyster Etheria elliptica on the shores of Lake Tana the largest lake in Ethiopia and the source of the Blue Nile. Some specimens live on stony ground on the southern shore. It was surprising to find oyster-like bivalves in a freshwater lake but they seem to be common.

Litoral biotope lake tana

This is the litoral biotope whit a surprising low diversity of molluscs. Etheria elliptica can be found as benthos on the rocks near the waterline.
