Fog in the chemical garden

Fluorescein is a fluorescent tracer color used for many applications. I have a few grains dissolved in an aqueous solution of sodium silicate in a chemical garden that is made of solid metal salts that are added to the liquid. The salts will start to dissolve and transform to silicate salt on the surface. This silicate is slightly soluble and grows to strange forms. The fluorescein makes the nebular structures that glow in ultraviolet light

  1. This reminds me of something I did as a kid (many, many years ago!) with coal, food coloring and ammonia. It 'grew' a garden of different colors.
